People use “merge” and “split” to describe several different jobs. Choosing the wrong operation can produce a file that opens correctly but is not the document you intended. These six questions come from linked public discussions; the answers below are our own workflow guidance for Filestation and its current limits. How do I replace one page without rebuilding the whole PDF?
A Super User discussion about replacing a single page describes the frustration of repeatedly splitting and joining a document. In Filestation, work visually in Organize PDF.
Open a copy of the main document, then add the replacement PDF. Move its page thumbnail next to the page you want to replace. Compare the two before deleting the old page. Finally move the replacement into the intended position and export. Reopen the saved result to check that the page count and surrounding pages are correct. Modifying a digitally signed file can invalidate its signature, so request a revised original when that matters.
How do I combine separately scanned odd and even pages?
This odd/even scan question asks about interleaving two files. Simply appending one PDF to the other is not enough: the pages must alternate, and the back-side scan may be reversed.
Add both files in the organizer and inspect the printed page numbers on the thumbnails. Arrange them into the actual reading sequence. On touch screens, use the thumbnail grip or the editor’s Move earlier and Move later controls. Filestation does not currently provide automatic odd/even interleaving. For a long document, use a dedicated interleaving workflow and verify its ordering rule before processing every page. Always inspect the transition between the first few front and back pages.
Can Split PDF cut a scanned double-page spread in half?
That is a different operation. In this double-page scan discussion, each PDF page contains two physical pages. Separating existing PDF pages will still leave both physical pages together.
Filestation’s Split PDF produces separate files for existing PDF pages. It does not detect a book’s centre or automatically divide every spread. Rescan as separate pages if practical, or use a tool explicitly designed to divide scanned spreads. Check whether the original includes a single cover page, uneven margins or pages in a different orientation before applying a batch cut. Is putting four pages on one sheet the same as merging?
No. A discussion about merging onto one page illustrates this ambiguity. Merging normally combines page sequences. Placing several reduced pages onto a single sheet is a layout or printing operation often called multiple pages per sheet.
Filestation’s Merge PDF does not offer that sheet-layout feature. Use a suitable print or layout application and inspect its preview. Check the resulting text size and the page order before saving or printing. If the recipient needs full-size originals for review, a reduced multi-page sheet may be the wrong output even if it uses fewer sheets.
Why did my rotation disappear after reopening the file?
A temporary viewer rotation can be confused with an edited document, as shown in this question about saving rotated PDFs. Confirm that you exported a new file instead of only changing your view.
Use Rotate PDF, rotate the relevant page thumbnails, and complete the export. Open the exported copy from its saved location and inspect it. Give it a distinct name so you do not accidentally reopen the original. If only part of the document is sideways, select those pages rather than rotating the entire file.
Why did merging make my text look blurry?

Filestation’s page organizer copies page content for PDF export; you do not need to convert each page to JPG first. Avoid an image round trip when the source already has readable text. If you later choose image-based compression, review the result separately: that mode changes the trade-off and can remove text selection and interactive features. Export is not a guarantee that every form, link or signature survives. Compare small text and important interactive elements in the saved copy.
A final check that catches many mistakes
