Putting a rectangle over words can change how a PDF looks without removing the words underneath. If you need to share a document without exposing sensitive content, do not treat ordinary drawing, cropping or watermark tools as secure redaction.

What Filestation’s editor actually changes

The PDF editor adds text, shapes, images and annotations to pages. It does not rewrite the original text layer. An opaque shape may obscure something visually while the original content remains inside the file.

That is suitable for design or review tasks where hiding underlying content is not a security requirement. It is not a reliable way to remove an address, bank detail or confidential paragraph before sending the document elsewhere.

Cropping changes the visible area

Crop PDF adjusts the page’s visible boundaries. Content outside those boundaries remains in the file and may be exposed by other software. Use cropping to improve presentation, not to remove confidential information.

Similarly, a PDF watermark labels a document. It does not encrypt the file, stop copying or remove hidden content. A “confidential” label is an instruction to the reader, not access control.

Use a dedicated removal workflow

For documents that require redaction, use a tool designed to remove the underlying content and follow its instructions for applying the changes. Adobe provides an official guide to redacting PDF content. Filestation’s current browser editor does not claim that capability.

If you have the original editable document, another option is to produce a new version containing only the information you intend to share, then inspect the exported PDF. That still requires review; starting again does not automatically prove the output contains no unintended information.

Inspect more than the visible page

  • Check the text and images on every page you intend to release.
  • Review comments, attachments, form fields and document properties where relevant.
  • Search and copy text as additional checks, not as proof that all hidden content is gone.
  • Reopen the saved output in another viewer where practical.
  • Keep the original in an appropriate private location and clearly label the sharing copy.

These are review prompts, not a security certification. For workplace records, use your organization’s approved process and software.

Does local processing make every output safe?

Local processing means the listed PDF operations run in your browser rather than sending document contents to a Filestation conversion server. It does not control your device, extensions, backups or the person receiving your exported file. Our privacy policy explains this distinction.

Does converting a PDF into images solve the problem?

Do not rely on conversion as a universal sanitization method. It may remove useful features and still produce an inappropriate or incomplete sharing copy. Choose a workflow intended for your confidentiality requirements.

For ordinary non-sensitive page organization, extract only the pages you need. For confidential information within those pages, use a dedicated redaction workflow and verify its output.
